Background of the Study
Public transport accessibility for persons with disabilities is a critical issue in Calabar South, where mobility challenges often hinder full participation in urban life (Johnson, 2023). Despite advancements in public transport systems, many services remain inadequately equipped to accommodate individuals with disabilities. Inaccessible infrastructure, limited specialized services, and a lack of supportive policies exacerbate the exclusion of disabled persons from economic and social activities (Williams, 2024). The urban transit environment, therefore, presents both opportunities and challenges in ensuring equitable access for all citizens. Recent studies underscore the need for inclusive transport policies that consider the diverse needs of disabled populations (Garcia, 2025). This study investigates the current state of public transport accessibility, evaluates the effectiveness of existing accommodations, and explores potential improvements to create a more inclusive urban transit system (Johnson, 2023).

Statement of the Problem
Persons with disabilities in Calabar South face significant challenges in accessing public transport, which limits their mobility and restricts their participation in economic and social activities (Johnson, 2023). Existing transit systems lack adequate infrastructure and services tailored to the needs of disabled individuals (Williams, 2024). The inadequacy of supportive policies and insufficient implementation of accessibility standards contribute to these challenges, resulting in systemic exclusion and reduced quality of life (Garcia, 2025). This study aims to identify these barriers and propose solutions for a more inclusive public transport system.

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To assess the current state of public transport accessibility for persons with disabilities.
  2. To evaluate the effectiveness of existing accessibility measures.
  3. To recommend improvements for creating an inclusive urban transit system.

Research Questions:

  1. What are the current barriers to public transport accessibility for persons with disabilities in Calabar South?
  2. How effective are the existing accessibility measures?
  3. What improvements can be made to enhance public transport accessibility?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Current public transport systems are inadequate for meeting the needs of persons with disabilities.
  2. Inadequate infrastructure significantly limits accessibility.
  3. Policy reforms can lead to improved accessibility and inclusiveness.

Significance of the Study
This study offers critical insights into the challenges faced by persons with disabilities in accessing public transport. Its findings will inform policymakers and transit authorities in creating more inclusive, accessible systems that enhance mobility and quality of life (Johnson, 2023; Williams, 2024; Garcia, 2025).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is limited to assessing the accessibility of public transport for persons with disabilities in Calabar South.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Public Transport: Shared transportation systems available to the general public.
  • Accessibility: The ease with which services can be used by all individuals, including those with disabilities.
  • Inclusive: Accommodating and enabling participation from all segments of society.
